BC Mountain Bike Tourism Symposium and a Pre-Symposium Trail Development Workshop

British Columbia has become synonymous with mountain biking and offers a full spectrum of experiences to satisfy this emerging tourism sector. Adventure tourism operators, community leaders, land managers, park planners, bicycle industry representatives and trail advocates recently gathered at the Talking Rock Resort near Chase from October 26th to 28th to discuss topics and opportunities associated with mountain bike tourism. The focus was on BC, but included lessons learned from other jurisdictions.

Topics included market research, economic impact, liability and risk management as well as development of bike friendly communities and services, partnerships and funding for trails, mountain biking tourism business opportunities and marketing community based mountain biking experiences.

The symposium featured new announcements for Provincial Trails Strategy initiatives by the Ministry of Tourism Culture and the Arts and included the launch of the new Community Based Mountain Bike Tourism Handbook published under Tourism BC’s Business Essentials program. The Shuswap Hut and Trail Alliance conducted a pre-symposium trail development workshop that was open to symposium participants and those interested in all aspects of recreation trail development.

The workshop was presented by the Western Canada Mountain Bike Tourism Association, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts and Thompson Rivers University and was hosted by the Shuswap Trail Alliance.

Information and details on the symposium are available on the Western Canada Mountain Bike Tourism Association (MBTA)’s web site at www.mbta.ca.
