SuperHostŪ Programs - Ambassador Workshop

Those who watched the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, whether on television, on the Internet or in person, observed a nation that came together to successfully “Welcome the World”.

Volunteers were a key factor in providing memorable experiences and friendly service to visitors during this historic event as the spotlight shone on China. A skilled, knowledgeable and hospitable BC volunteer sector will likewise prove to be an integral part of creating an unforgettable experience for all that visit the province in February and March, 2010 and beyond.

In British Columbia, 1.5 million volunteers contribute 114 million hours a year in a variety of ways ranging from organizing, supervising and coordinating events to fundraising, teaching, educating, and serving as unpaid members of committees or boards. The role of volunteers is paramount to the BC economy as the combined 147,000 paid staff that work in the over 20,000 BC non-profit voluntary organizations makes the volunteer sector one of the largest social and economic drivers in the province, generating $11 billion in annual revenues .

To prepare for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) will directly train approximately 25,000 individuals who will be positioned at VANOC sponsored venues and sites.

Various other BC organizations such as Volunteer BC, 2010 Legacies Now, and Tourism BC are also collaborating to ensure that the thousands of volunteers outside VANOC sponsored locations are adequately trained to create a lasting impression for visitors during our moments on the global stage.

Tourism BC, SuperHost Programs is proud to launch the Ambassador Workshop, a 3 hour training session, aimed at organizations wanting to train volunteers in preparation for events like the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The session contains three core areas:

  • Preparing your volunteers for an event,
  • Key customer service reminders and,
  • Facilitated discussion on utilizing local community resources to provide accurate and timely information to visitors to your community.

Currently, the workshop is offered by Tourism BC exclusively, however, starting in November of this year, licensed SuperHost community delivery organizations across BC will start attending Train-the-Trainer sessions so that they may deliver the Ambassador Workshop in their respective communities.
